Stories of Hope: Seven Arrows Changed My Life

This is an interview with one of our alumni, who can tell you about their personal experience at Seven Arrows Recovery.

What motivated you to seek treatment?

I had reached a point in my life where I realized that I could not overcome my addiction without in-patient treatment.  I hit my personal rock-bottom and was ready to do whatever it took to get better.

Why did you choose Seven Arrows Recovery?

I chose Seven Arrows Recovery because they offer a complete approach to addiction recovery which encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual health, set on a beautiful ranch in the high desert.

What is a typical day like at Seven Arrows?

A typical day at Seven Arrows starts early in the morning with a circle ceremony where together we set our intentions for the day.  After that we clean stables and feed and water the horses before having breakfast, the first of 3 meals made each day by on-site chefs. Much of the day is spent in group therapy focusing on several topics to include 12-step addiction programs, past trauma healing, relapse prevention, mindfulness, self-regulation, art, yoga, and interpersonal skill building. There is also time built into the schedule for individual therapy, case management, and planning for after care. The afternoon might include a group trail ride on horseback through the desert, a sacred sweat-lodge ceremony, a kiva fire ceremony, or a hike in the nearby mountains, depending on the day.  The evenings allow for downtime while watching the beautiful sunsets from the porch, reading, watching TV, and enjoying the fellowship of the other clients at the ranch.

What was the most beneficial aspect of Seven Arrows?

The most beneficial aspect of Seven Arrows is the serene setting which provides a perfect place to heal and grow and prepare for a new future in recovery.  Living and working together on a ranch quickly fosters a family atmosphere, which helps when it comes to sharing and being vulnerable in group therapy. The entire program, staff, and location work together to provide a unique approach to treatment that is holistic and personal.

Did Seven Arrows address your specific needs?

When I arrived at Seven Arrows I was spiritually broken.  I had just enough strength to get myself there and very little hope to cling on to.  The staff and other clients at Seven Arrows loved and cared for me until I was able to start loving and caring for myself again.  I was provided with the gift of reconnecting with my personal higher power through the spiritual ceremonies and practices offered there. Although it is a group setting, I was able to work on my personal issues and custom build a recovery program that continues to work for me.

Did you have a favorite holistic experience (hiking, horses, sweat, yoga…) and why?

My favorite holistic experience is the sweat lodge ceremony.  It is a unique gift to be able to participate in a traditional sweat ceremony and for me it was a deeply spiritual experience.

What advice would you give someone seeking Treatment?
